How Can You Tell If You Have Rosacea?

With multiple different presentations, rosacea can be easy to recognize or challenging to diagnose. While typically rosacea will present with red and white bumps on the cheeks, forehead, and chin, it may present with overgrown blood vessels, flushing of the face, and/or sensitivity of the eyes. Dr. Rieder has been treating rosacea for years, and has a mastery of both classic and atypical presentations. Like acne, rosacea carries with it a large psychological burden and is well-known to flare with many different bodily stressors including sunlight, alcohol, exercise, embarrassment, and certain foods. Rosacea can be a very stubborn disease to treat, and requires a dermatologist who is expert at both the diagnosis and treatment options to achieve optimal outcomes.

What Treatments Are Available?

Dr. Rieder will nearly always recommend combination treatment for rosacea – topical treatments and washes to help prevent flares, and when necessary, oral medications to treat rosacea flares. While dermatologists are excellent at controlling the red and white bumps of rosacea with medications, they are less expert at treating the blood vessel component with prescriptions. A vascular laser such as the DermaV, the gold standard in the treatment of blood vessels and redness, is nearly always recommended and is extremely helpful for treating the aesthetic and psychological consequences of rosacea.
